Facts of records
From 1864, any person whose marriage was to be celebrated by a Roman Catholic clergyman was required to have the clergyman fill out a certificate containing the information detailed below, and forward it within three days of the marriage to the Registrar. In practice, as had already been the case for other marriages from 1845, the clergyman simply kept blank copies of these certificates, filled them in after the ceremony, and forwarded them to the Registrar.

It is still important to remember, though, that legal responsibility for the registration actually rested with the parties marrying, not the clergyman.

The information to be supplied was:

the date when married;
the names and surnames of each of the parties marrying;
their respective ages;
their condition (i.e. bachelor, spinster, widow,widower);
their rank, profession or occupation;
their residences at the time of marriage;
the name and surname of the fathers of each of the parties;
the rank, profession or occupation of the fathers of each of the parties.e

I am trying to learn how to navigate this site. My last post didn't show. I want to add Clan O'Neill. I am looking for any info that others may have on my genealogy . My ancestors immigrated to Clay County and Nicholas County, West Virginia in the early 1800's. My 4th or 5th great grandfather was Jeremiah O'Neal born circa 1807 and died in 1844. His son was my 3 great grandfather , John Neal, born 1780 in Virginia and died April 10, 1844. He was married to Mary Ann O'Dell. All I can find out about my 5th great grandfather , Jeremiah O'Neal, is that he was married to Catherine Jones and he immigrated from Cork,Cork, Ireland. His father was Murdoch O'Neil (different spelling from his) , born circa 1700 in County Tyrone and married to Margaret Hill. Story was that he was a wealthy landowner. I have hit a roadblock with he & his son Jeremiah because I have so little info. I plan on devoting more time to research soon. But if anyone recognizes the little history I have, that would be a real blessing.

A whole subforum for Clan O'Neill already exists here: viewforum.php?f=9
If you intended to add an O'Neill family tree instead feel free to click the "new topic" button here: viewforum.php?f=34
As there are already other O'Neill family trees please chose an unambigous title for your tree :)

Hi Admins,

I would like to know more about my family, Clan McGinn. I have traced my family back to my Great, Great Grandfather Thomas McGinn. He appears in the 1861 British census aged 27. the only other info on that is he was born in Ireland. His death certificate names his parents as John and Ann. I can find no record of them and assume they perished during "An Gorta Mor". I would be grateful for any help you can give.

Many thanks

Hi Tam,
created a subforum Clan McGill for general information regarding this great Clan here:
viewforum.php?f=51
plus started a new topic in the family tree forum for you to publish your personal family tree as far as you know it already, and hopefully to find some help and elaborate further on it:

]This interesting Irish "clan" surname derives from the Olde Gaelic "O'Leahtobhair", and is often confused with "Lawler", a name which almost certainly has a different origin. Lawlor derives from "Laloir", the most ancient anglicised form, and as such the Clan were prominent landowners in County Leix. In the late 16th century an alliance between the O'Dempseys and some English settlers led to the destruction of the "Lawlors" and their kinsmen the O'Mores, the surviving chiefs being driven out to Kerry, although the names Lawlor and Lalor are still common in Leix in the 20th century. The name means "The descendant of the sick one", which seems a strange etymology for a warlike clan, and may originally have had another meaning entirely. The epicentre of the name is the famous Rock of Dunamase, County Leix. However, in England it is possible that some "Lawlors" derive from the Huguenot (French) "Laulloir", which has almost exactly the same English pronunciation, an example being Pierre Laulloir, a witness at the French Huguenot Church, Threadneedle Street, London on August 28th 1703. As Lawlor the first recording is that of Dennis Lawlor, a witness at St. Anne's Church, Soho, Westminster on February 14th 1719. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Harry Lalor, which was dated 1577, recorded as the hero of the massacre of Mullaghmar, during the reign of Queen Elizabeth 1, known as "Good Queen Bess" 1558 - 1603. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.

This is some of the history of my Clan
