Young Conn O 'Neills fate...Officially
Conn was actually sent to Eton by James I, who succeeded Queen Elizabeth in 1603. We have three of his bills here, signed by Fulke Greville to authorise the payment.
The Lords of the Council made the decision to remove him to the Tower ( as shown by the receipt of Sir Allen Apsley, the Constable) but we have no record of the individual(s) who actually escorted him there or any papers relating to his time here apart from the bills.
I should perhaps make it clear this is the case with all boys; the records for this period deal almost entirely with the running of the College’s estates. As far as we know he never returned here. As for a guardian, this was in a sense the king himself, who had ordered his expenses at Eton to be met.
We cannot assist with any information about his subsequent fate but it has been researched. The GEC Peerage notes (vol. XII pt.2, p.139) that an administration of his goods was issued by the Prerogative Court of Canterbury, 7 July 1627,and as he is apparently described in that document as ‘of [the parish of] St. Peter ad Vincula’, which is the church in the Tower, he must have died there.
................
And so ends another pitiful chapter of O'Neill Clan and Irish history. Poor Conn to have died in such a horrible and torturous place as the Tower among Foreigners and strangers. I feel terrible for anyone to have suffered this fate, but for any Irishman or Women to have died in that place is beyond words.
And in this case an O'Neill of Royal birth and him just a young boy, just awful, very very sad. I was hoping we might find that he was educated or taken away by by Sir Henry Sdyney as his own or something like that etc. At least the line would have still of been there but alas this was not the case.
