You're speaking of links Tricia?

Aye, grey with dotted underline ... same on computer but if you hover mouse over it it turns red.

btw Tricia's picture above reminds me that maybe I should tell you all that I've limited the nesting depth of quotes to 3.

Personally I think more than quote in quote in quote would confuse more than clarify ... and the very idea of quotes is to clarify by showing readers what exactly is replied to. However if anyone feels more is needed let me know and I'll change it ;)

another technical possibility we have here - but not yet implemented:

we can create groups and then add selected users to those groups - and create subforums that are open only to a specified group, non-public that is ;) with one exception, admins have access to anywhere in the forum, that's a technical necessity.

So if e.g. some people here want to work on a common family tree but not yet (or not at all) go public with it, just let the admins know and we can provide a private space for your group.

top of each post, left to the time stamp, there's a wee "sheet of paper" symbol ... if you click it your browser will jump exactly to that post and show its URL in the browser line.

When referring to a post you can copy the URL from there and paste it in your reply to make it easy for everyone to look up the post you're referring to.

Just a first attempt to follow your instructions Aoife.Copy the URL? means?

Hi John, the URL is the internet address so to say ... the string of letters and/or numbers showing up in the browser line (top of the browser, the window in which you are viewing websites) telling where exactly in the internet you are.
For your last post it is "http://www.ulsterclans.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?p=3626#p3626" - had to put it in quotes to show you how it looks originally, without quotes the software here will turn it into a nicer looking link when displaying it ;)
If you click in that browser line once it will turn blue, [ctrl]+[c] pressed simultaneously will copy it and with [ctrl]+[v] you can copy it wherever you intend to, to let people know what internet address you are referring to.

That's the same all over the internet, the specialty of phpBB forums is that not only complete pages have their URL, but each and every single post is given its own unique URL, so you can refer your readers to exactly the one post you're speaking about, instead of having to tell them "this page, and post number so and so on it".

To retrieve the URL of the post you mean just click the wee sheet symbol at top of it and the URL will show up in the browser line, from where you can copy it and then paste it to your own contribution.
Hope this helps a bit :)

Just implemented share buttons bottom left on each page here, to make it easy to share pages via facebook, twitter, google plus, email and some others.

The buttons are meant to share the exact page they are on, so if you want to share a link to the forum as a whole you have to go to the start page and use the buttons there, if you use the buttons on this page here e.g. you will share page 2 of "technical stuff".

Sure this might be of general interest, but most of all, when posting this I'm thinking of the new members, as they easily might be overwhelmed with all this material and wondering how to connect to it ... by now such vast amounts of data have been accumulated that it's virtually impossible to read them all in order to find out if something connects to your own family tree:

There's a search function on the very top of each page, just type in your query and hit enter or click the wee magnifying glass next to the box ... only shortcoming is that some keywords are rejected because they're too common - what makes perfect sense regarding nonsensical searches for words like "and" or "is" but sadly, due to the material presented here, some other terms like e.g. O'Neill are regarded as too common too and won't return any results.

However if you entered a valid key word the software will return a list of links to wherever on this website the keyword is mentioned. Above that list you find a "search the results" input box which can help you narrow down the list if you type in another key word, and below the list at the very bottom of the page you find a "return to advanced search" link which opens a new page offering quite powerful search options. Enjoy! :)
